Our Favorite Beginner Fantasy Series

1. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Book 1 in the ACOTAR Series

If you’re looking for magic, romance, and a heroine who learns to fight for herself, this is the place to start. Feyre’s journey from struggling artist to survivor in a deadly fae world is packed with twists, slow-burn romance, and moments you’ll want to talk about with other readers. It’s lush, addictive, and the series only gets better from here.

2. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Book 1 in the Throne of Glass Series

Meet Celaena Sardothien: assassin, survivor, and one of the most complex heroines you’ll ever read. This book begins with a competition for the kingdom’s next royal assassin and quickly becomes so much more, think palace intrigue, unlikely friendships, and a world that keeps expanding.

A quick note about reading order: Some readers (including me) start with The Assassin’s Blade, the prequel novellas that introduce Celaena’s backstory. Others jump right into Throne of Glass and go back to the novellas later. There are lots of opinions, I suggest looking into the different reading orders and the experience you'd prefer!

Are you Team Celaena? Don’t miss our Throne of Glass for more ways to celebrate your new favorite series.

3. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

Book 1 in The Empyrean Series

If you want dragons, danger, and a cast you can’t help but root for, Fourth Wing delivers. Violet enters a cutthroat war college, facing deadly trials and unexpected alliances. The tension is high, the world-building is epic, and the romance is a slow-burn with teeth. This is perfect for fans of action and character growth.

4. Powerless by Lauren Roberts

Book 1 in The Powerless Trilogy

In a world where power means everything, Paedyn Gray is just trying to survive. She’s clever, resourceful, and impossible not to cheer for as she faces off against a world determined to keep her powerless. The series mixes romance, rebellion, and secrets that will keep you guessing.

5. The Serpent & the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent

Book 1 in The Crowns of Nyaxia Series

For anyone who loves morally gray characters, forbidden romance, and dark, immersive worlds—this is a must-read. Oraya’s journey in a deadly tournament will have you on the edge of your seat, and the slow-burn romance is unforgettable.

6. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Book 1 in The Folk of the Air Series

Political intrigue, enemies-to-lovers tension, and fae court drama—what more could you ask for? Jude Duarte is the ultimate underdog in a world that doesn’t want her. If you want something sharp, twisty, and totally binge-worthy, start here.

7. Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Book 1 in the Caraval Series

Welcome to Caraval—a magical game where nothing is as it seems. This book is pure whimsy, with riddles, illusions, and a plot that will keep you guessing until the very end. It’s the perfect entry point for readers who want fantasy that feels like a carnival ride.

8. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Book 1 in the Shadow and Bone Trilogy

Step into the Grishaverse! Alina Starkov’s world is one of magic, war, and secrets. This is a classic, fast-paced fantasy adventure with memorable characters, an addictive magic system, and a villain you won’t forget.

9. Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber

Book 1 in the Once Upon a Broken Heart Series

If you crave fairytales with a twist, this series is for you. Evangeline’s story is full of magic, curses, and impossible choices. The writing is lush, the world is enchanting, and the story will break your heart in the best way.
